Real Madrid Open Champions League Campaign With 2-1 Victory Over Inter Milan

Real Madrid have made a winning start to their 2026–27 UEFA Champions League campaign, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Inter Milan on Tuesday.

Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute after being set up by Brahim Díaz. The goal saw the French forward reach 71 Champions League goals, drawing level with Real Madrid legend Raúl on the competition’s all-time scoring list.

Madrid doubled their advantage through Federico Valverde, who capitalized on a costly goalkeeping error to make it 2-0. Valverde was subsequently named Man of the Match for his influential performance.

Despite receiving the individual award, the Uruguayan midfielder was quick to praise goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, whose crucial saves helped Real Madrid maintain their advantage and ultimately secure all three points.

Inter Milan refused to give up and found a late lifeline when Carlos Augusto pulled a goal back. The Italian side pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Real Madrid remained composed to see out the victory.

The match also saw praise for Vinícius Júnior, with José Mourinho highlighting the Brazilian’s work rate and commitment. The victory was particularly notable for Vinícius as it marked his first European win against his former club.

Real Madrid will now look to build on the positive opening result as they continue their quest for another Champions League title, while Inter Milan will be left to reflect on a spirited performance that ultimately fell just short.
