The Plateau State Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development stands as a beacon for effective regulation of tin mining activities and robust environmental protection efforts.
Commissioner for the ministry, Hon. Peter Lamba Gwom, in a recent press conference at the Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat, highlighted the Ministry’s pivotal role in overseeing these critical sectors, with a keen focus on tin mining regulation and the operations of the Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA).
Under the strategic framework of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the Ministry has undergone strategic restructuring, merging the former Ministry of Environment with the Ministry of Mineral Development.
The combination emphasises the fundamental link between environmental preservation and mineral resource utilization, aligning with Governor Mutfwang’s vision for holistic development in Plateau State.
Hon. Gwom outlined the Ministry’s concerted efforts in regulating tin mining activities, emphasizing the importance of mitigating environmental impacts while maximizing the benefits of mineral extraction. Through the Mines, Fields Surveillance, and Soil Conservation Department, The Ministry has put in place strong monitoring measures to combat illegal mining activities and avoid degradation to the environment, notably in tin mining hotspots around the state.
Furthermore, the Ministry, in collaboration with PEPSA, has spearheaded initiatives to ensure the cleanliness and sanitation of mining communities, safeguarding public health and mitigating pollution risks associated with mining activities. PEPSA’s proactive measures, including the refurbishment of waste management infrastructure and the enhancement of street cleaning services, underscore the agency’s commitment to maintaining environmental integrity amidst rapid industrialization.
In addition to regulatory efforts, the Ministry has actively engaged with mining communities and stakeholders to foster sustainable development practices, promoting community-driven approaches to resource management and conflict resolution. Through advocacy visits, community development agreements, and capacity-building programs, the Ministry aims to cultivate a conducive environment for responsible mining practices that balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.
As Plateau State continues to harness its mineral wealth for socio-economic advancement, the Ministry remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting sustainable mining practices and safeguarding the natural environment for future generations.
