The Plateau State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mrs. Kaneng Tabitha Pam-Hworo, has urged bloggers and online media practitioners to prioritise accuracy and verification in their reports to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation.
Pam-Hworo made the call on Tuesday in Jos when the Plateau State Bloggers and Online Media Association (PLABOMA) paid her a courtesy visit to appreciate her for delivering the keynote address at the association’s 2026 World Social Media Day celebration.
She said the rapid growth of digital media had transformed information dissemination, but warned that speed should never take precedence over accuracy.
“Be careful with the kind of news you publish. Verify your stories and avoid spreading fake news. Your reports should unite the country, not divide it,” she advised.
The NOA director cited the circulation of false information about the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise as an example of how misinformation could mislead the public if reports were not properly verified.
She called on bloggers and online publishers to uphold professional ethics by publishing factual, balanced and credible reports, adding that the agency remained committed to partnering with online media practitioners to promote civic education, public awareness and national development.
Earlier, the PLABOMA delegation, led by the association’s General Secretary, Ibrahim Kallamu, said the visit was to appreciate the NOA director for honouring the association’s invitation and delivering the keynote address during its World Social Media Day celebration.
Kallamu said PLABOMA, established in 2020, had grown into a professional body of more than 30 bloggers and online media practitioners committed to responsible digital journalism.
He commended the National Orientation Agency for its public enlightenment campaigns across Plateau State and pledged the association’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the agency in tackling fake news, misinformation and disinformation.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining their partnership to promote responsible journalism, public enlightenment and the dissemination of credible information across Plateau State.
