A bill seeking to expand the local government structure in Plateau State has successfully passed second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill is sponsored by Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, former Deputy Speaker of the House, and is aimed at improving grassroots governance and service delivery across the state.

Presenting the proposal, Wase said the bill addresses long-standing issues of accessibility, equity, and development, particularly in remote and underserved communities.

He explained that the creation of additional Local Government Areas would bring government closer to the people and make local administration more effective.

According to him, smaller and more manageable councils would enhance the delivery of essential services such as primary healthcare, basic education, and rural infrastructure.

Wase also noted that the bill would promote fairness and inclusion among communities and ethnic groups, helping to address concerns of marginalisation.

Supporters of the bill argued that expanding the number of LGAs would boost political participation and improve representation for Plateau State at both state and federal levels.

The proposal further highlighted economic benefits, including a potential increase in the state’s share of federal allocations.

Proponents added that new LGAs would be better positioned to harness local resources, develop agriculture, and stimulate local economies.

With the bill now clearing second reading, it will proceed to further legislative stages for detailed consideration and public scrutiny in the House of Representatives.
