Iranian Blogger Sentenced to Death for Allegedly Insulting Iran’s Supreme Leader

Lumidys Blog Media is reporting that a 33-year-old Iranian blogger, Soda Ebrahimi Shamsabadi, has reportedly been sentenced to death after being accused of insulting Iran’s Supreme Leader and engaging in activities considered hostile to the government.

Shamsabadi was reportedly convicted on charges including “corruption on earth,” media and propaganda activities against national security, and alleged cooperation with hostile foreign governments.

According to reports, Iranian authorities also accused the blogger of photographing a location where a missile had struck and sending the image to a Persian-language media organization based outside Iran.

Shamsabadi, who was raised in Tehran and lived in Bandar Abbas, was arrested in March and has been held at Bandar Abbas Prison. Reports say she spent 20 days in solitary confinement.

Before her arrest, Shamsabadi had publicly criticized the government’s handling of nationwide protests and shared posts documenting violence and alleged abuses.

Her case comes amid growing international concern over the number of executions and death sentences in Iran. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has warned that the increasing use of death sentences is being used to create fear and suppress dissent.

According to figures cited in the report, at least 29 people arrested during January protests have been executed since March, while approximately 950 executions have reportedly been documented in Iran so far this year.

The development has renewed concerns among human-rights organizations over freedom of expression, political dissent and the treatment of activists and journalists in Iran.
