Mutfwang Moves to Strengthen Plateau State Police Framework

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has intensified efforts to strengthen the framework for the establishment of a state police system as part of measures to improve security across the state.

The move is aimed at developing a policing structure that can complement existing security agencies and provide a more effective response to security challenges affecting communities across Plateau State.

Governor Mutfwang has continued to advocate stronger community-based security arrangements, particularly the need for security agencies to improve intelligence gathering and respond more effectively to emerging threats.

Earlier in the year, the governor inaugurated a 14-member State Advisory Committee on State Police to examine the proposed framework and make recommendations on how a state police system could operate in Plateau.

The initiative is expected to examine important areas including the structure, administration, recruitment, training and operational requirements of a possible state police arrangement.

Mutfwang has also stressed the importance of strengthening existing security structures, including Operation Rainbow, to enable them to play a greater role in intelligence gathering and community security.

Mutfwang Seeks Improved Security Coordination

The governor’s latest efforts come amid continuing security concerns in parts of Plateau State.

The state government has maintained that effective security requires stronger cooperation between government authorities, security agencies, traditional institutions and local communities.

A strengthened state policing framework could potentially give authorities greater capacity to respond to local security threats while improving intelligence sharing and community engagement.

However, the proposed structure would have to operate within Nigeria’s constitutional and legal framework governing policing and security.

State Police Debate Gains Momentum

The establishment of state police has remained a major issue in Nigeria’s national security debate, with supporters arguing that policing closer to communities could improve intelligence gathering and crime prevention.

For Plateau State, the Mutfwang administration sees stronger local security capacity as an important component of efforts to protect lives and property and sustain peace across the state.

The state government’s advisory process is therefore expected to provide recommendations that could guide the development of Plateau’s state police framework.
