NDLEA Arrests Fugitive Drug Kingpin After Two Years, Repatriates Him From Benin
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a suspected drug kingpin who had been on the run for two years and subsequently repatriated him from the Republic of Benin to Nigeria.
The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation by the anti-narcotics agency as authorities intensified efforts to track down wanted individuals linked to the illicit drug trade.
The suspect reportedly fled Nigeria after coming under the radar of law enforcement authorities and had remained outside the country for about two years.
Following intelligence gathering and collaboration with relevant authorities, NDLEA operatives were able to locate and apprehend him in Benin.
He was subsequently brought back to Nigeria to face the authorities over the allegations against him.
The development highlights the agency’s continued efforts to pursue major players in the illegal drug trade, including suspects who attempt to evade arrest by leaving the country.
The NDLEA has continued to rely on intelligence gathering, surveillance and cooperation with international and regional law enforcement agencies to disrupt drug trafficking networks operating across Nigeria’s borders.
The agency’s mandate includes combating the cultivation, production, trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs in Nigeria.
The latest arrest is expected to assist ongoing investigations into the activities of the suspect and any wider network with which he may have been associated.
Authorities are also expected to take appropriate legal steps as the investigation progresses.
The NDLEA has repeatedly stressed that fleeing the country will not necessarily shield wanted drug suspects from law enforcement, particularly as cooperation between Nigerian authorities and their counterparts in neighbouring countries continues to improve.
