House of Representatives passes the Bill for the Establishment of Federal College of Education Dengi

The House of Representatives has today, passed the FCE Dengi Establishment Bill 2023.

You will recall that the Member representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency, Rt Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi had sought the replacement of the Federal College of Education, Pankshin which was upgraded to a full fledged University of Education, by sponsoring a bill for the establishment of Federal College of Education, Dengi towards the end of his first tenure in 2023.

The bill was passed into law by the 9th National Assembly, but due to want of time and other prevailing circumstances, it wasn’t assented to by then President Buhari, thereby necessitating its reenactment by the 10th House of Representatives, as sponsored by Gagdi again.

The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Establish Federal College of Education, Dengi-Kanam, Plateau State to Provide Full time courses, Teaching Instructions and Training in Technology, Applied Science, Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities and Management and other Related Matters (HB 35)”, received the node of the committee of whole, after going through all rudiments of legislative enactments.

With the passage of the Bill by the House of Representatives, the first huddle has been successfully crossed, awaiting concurrence by the Senate before being submitted to President Tinubu for his assent.

Reacting to the development, Rt Hon. Gagdi was full of gratitude for his colleagues for the seamless passage of the Bill and assured that no stone will be left unturned to ensure that the institution comes to live, leveraging on Tinubu administration’s resolve to put Nigeria’s educational advancement on the world map.

Gagdi maintains that achieving every giant stride begins with taking a bold step of faith, and that the dream of replacing the upgraded FCE with another one within his constituency is his next legislative agenda, which he shall pursue with everything within him.

House Committee on Navy Launches Probe into the Ordeal of Seaman Abbas Haruna

    3

The House of Representatives Committee on Navy is gearing up to launch a comprehensive investigation into the unlawful detention of Seaman Abbas Haruna, who has been held for nearly six years without trial. The detention, allegedly ordered by Brigadier General MS Adamu, has sparked outrage across the nation, with the committee vowing to hold all responsible parties accountable.

The story of Seaman Abbas, which was brought to light by his wife, Mrs. Hussaina Iliyasu, on the popular Human Rights Television program Berekete, reveals a troubling ordeal. In 2018, Abbas was deployed to Sarti Baruwa, Taraba State, as part of a joint military operation. During his service under Brigadier General MS Adamu, a disagreement occurred between the two, which resulted in Abbas’s prolonged detention. He has been held in inhumane conditions ever since, without the benefit of a proper trial, in direct violation of the Armed Forces Act of 2004.

The emotional account by Abbas’s wife moved many in the Berekete studio to tears, with listeners appalled by the harsh treatment of the naval officer over what appears to be a minor misunderstanding. Brigadier General MS Adamu’s alleged cruelty has ignited widespread condemnation from Nigerians, who have rallied behind Abbas’s case.

Following this outcry, the House Committee on Navy, led by Chairman Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, PhD OON, has stepped in to uncover the truth behind Abbas’s unjust treatment. The committee’s investigation seeks not only to protect the rights of Seaman Abbas but also to preserve the integrity of Nigeria’s military institutions. In a country governed by the rule of law, no officer, regardless of rank, should be above the law.

The committee has pledged to ensure that every officer involved in this violation is held accountable, and they are committed to working closely with military authorities to see that justice is served. This investigation is a reminder that the rights of every citizen, especially those serving in our armed forces, must be protected under Nigeria’s legal framework.
