In a significant legislative development on Wednesday, the House of Representatives moved a step closer to reforming Nigeria’s maritime training architecture, as a bill sponsored by Yusuf Adamu Gagdi successfully passed its Second Reading.
The proposed legislation seeks to establish a Naval Training Command that will serve as the central coordinating body for all training institutions under the Nigerian Navy. If enacted, the Command will be responsible for standardizing training procedures, ensuring quality control, and enhancing the overall management of naval and allied maritime institutions collaborating with the Navy.
Announcing the milestone on his official Facebook page, Gagdi described the passage as a critical step toward strengthening Nigeria’s maritime security framework. According to him, the bill is designed not only to streamline training operations within the Navy but also to foster synergy with other maritime training institutions across the country.
Observers note that the absence of a centralized training command has long posed challenges in terms of coordination, duplication of efforts, and inconsistencies in training standards. The proposed Command is therefore expected to introduce a more structured and efficient system, aligning Nigeria’s naval training with global best practices.
