The National Agency for Food and Drugs has taken a decisive action in Borno State following the heavy flooding that affected the area. A team from the agency, in collaboration with the Borno State Ministry of Health, conducted an operation in Gamboru, Maiduguri, where they seized large quantities of drugs that were improperly stored and damaged by the floods.
The goal of this operation is to prevent unsafe drugs from being sold to the public due to health risks. NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the need for proper pharmaceutical storage and directed North-East Director Kenneth Azikiwe to oversee the removal and destruction of the compromised drugs.
Borno’s Health Commissioner, Baba Malam Gana, called for better storage practices in local markets. He pledged that the state government would work with relevant agencies to improve conditions in Gamboru market and prevent future incidents. Affected business owners will receive compensation supported by President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babagana Zulum.
Bukar Modu, Chairman of the Gamboru Medicine Market, pledged to cooperate with the government on public health initiatives and requested financial support for rebuilding the market.
NAFDAC also reminded the public to be vigilant when purchasing medications. They advised consumers to check for any signs of contamination, such as wet or damaged packaging, and to report any suspicious activities.
The agency is committed to ensuring that safe and quality medications are available to the public.
