The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to youth-centered migration reforms as the country prepares to lead the RABAT PROCESS in 2025.

RABAT PROCESS, also known as the Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development, is a regional forum that aims to address migration issues between Africa and Europe.

Dr. Nentawe made this known during a meeting with a delegation from the RABAT PROCESS Secretariat, led by Monica Zanette, Head of the Pan-African Initiative at the ICMPD, in his office in Abuja. “The RABAT PROCESS has been instrumental in reinforcing and strengthening the capacities of our people,” he stated.

As Nigeria readies itself for the Chairmanship of the RABAT PROCESS, Dr. Nentawe emphasized the country’s focus on addressing migration issues affecting young Nigerians, particularly the JAPA Syndrome, which has seen many youths seeking opportunities abroad. “We are ready to champion ambitious programs focusing on youth inclusiveness and tackling migration trends like the JAPA Syndrome,” he said.

Dr. Nentawe highlighted the achievements of Nigerian migrants in various sectors worldwide, underscoring the need for legal migration as a path to global success. “Legal Nigerian migrants continue to excel globally in sports, the economy, healthcare, and education,” he noted. He encouraged Nigerian youth to view themselves as global citizens and take advantage of the opportunities migration can offer.

With Nigeria poised to take on a leading role, Dr. Nentawe assured the delegation of his ministry’s commitment to working with the RABAT PROCESS Secretariat to turn migration into a driver of development. “With the support of the RABAT PROCESS Secretariat, we will ensure that migration becomes a tool for opportunity and sustainable development for all Nigerians,” he emphasized.

He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership in prioritizing migration as part of Nigeria’s national agenda. “Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, migration remains a priority, and we are committed to using this platform to shape migration policies across Africa,” Dr. Nentawe concluded.
