Stop Scaring Tourists Away from Plateau, Group Tells Former Sports Minister Dalung

A socio-political group in Plateau State has called on former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, to refrain from making statements that could discourage tourists, investors, and visitors from coming to the state.

The group expressed concern over recent remarks attributed to Dalung, arguing that such comments could create a negative perception of Plateau State despite ongoing efforts to improve security, attract investment, and promote tourism.

According to the group, Plateau remains one of Nigeria’s leading tourism destinations, known for its scenic landscapes, cultural diversity, pleasant climate, and growing economic opportunities. The stakeholders stressed that while security challenges exist in some parts of the country, portraying the state in a negative light could undermine development efforts and affect investor confidence.

They noted that government authorities, security agencies, traditional institutions, and community leaders have continued to work together to maintain peace and improve safety across the state. The group further stated that many local businesses depend on tourism and visitor traffic, making positive engagement crucial for economic growth.

The stakeholders urged public figures and political leaders to exercise caution when discussing sensitive issues that could impact the state’s reputation. They maintained that constructive criticism should be accompanied by solutions that support peacebuilding and development rather than creating fear among potential visitors.

Plateau State has long been recognized for attractions such as its unique rock formations, waterfalls, wildlife reserves, and cultural festivals, which continue to draw visitors from across Nigeria and beyond. Tourism operators have also called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to promote the state’s image and encourage sustainable growth in the sector.
